Local House Shifting Checklist: 10 Things to Do Before Moving Day
Most local moves in Bangalore don’t go wrong because of the movers — they go wrong because of everything that was supposed to happen before the movers showed up. A missing key, an elevator that wasn’t booked, a fridge that’s still running when the truck arrives. None of it is dramatic, but it adds an hour here and an hour there, and suddenly a same-day move stretches into the evening.
Here’s a checklist that actually accounts for how local moves in this city tend to go sideways.
Book your move at least a week out, longer if it's a weekend Weekends fill up fast, especially toward the end of the month when most leases turn over. If your move date is flexible, a weekday slot is usually easier to lock in and sometimes cheaper.
Check building rules at both ends Many apartment complexes in Bangalore require advance notice to book the lift for moving purposes, or restrict moving hours to avoid peak traffic in the basement parking. Call your society office or building management a few days ahead — this alone prevents more delays than people expect.
Sort before you pack, not during Set aside anything you're not taking — donations, discards, stuff for the scrap dealer — before the packing team arrives. Sorting mid-pack slows everyone down and usually means things get packed by mistake anyway.
Use up perishables and defrost the fridge Plan your last grocery run to run out close to moving day, and unplug and defrost your fridge at least a few hours before pickup so it's dry and ready to move.
Keep an "essentials" bag separate Chargers, medicines, a change of clothes, important documents — pack these separately and keep them with you, not in the truck. You don't want to be digging through forty boxes for your blood pressure medication on move-in night.
Photograph valuable or fragile items before packing A quick photo of your TV, artwork, or antique furniture before it's wrapped gives you a reference point if you ever need to raise a damage claim.
Label boxes by room, not by contents "Kitchen" and "Kids' Room" on a box tells the loading crew where it goes at the other end faster than a detailed inventory list would. Save the detailed list for anything fragile or high-value.
Confirm parking access at the new address If your new place has narrow lanes, no direct truck access, or restricted visitor parking, tell your moving company in advance. It changes what size vehicle they'll send and whether they'll need a smaller shuttle vehicle for the last stretch.
Keep some cash and your ID handy Even if you've paid the bulk of the moving cost in advance, it helps to have some cash and identification on hand for any last-minute needs on the day.
Do a final walkthrough before the truck leaves Check cupboards, under beds, balconies, and the backs of shelves. It's the most commonly skipped step and the most common source of "we forgot something" calls after the truck has already left.
None of these steps take more than a few minutes individually, but skipping two or three of them is usually what turns a smooth same-day move into a stressful one.
